Elfriede Baier - Silk . Painting . Pleating

The wish to enhance materials by pleating them dates back to antiquity. Even in ancient Egypt it was common to wear richly pleated items of clothing.

However, due to the time-consuming production process and the large amount of material required, this remained the preserve of the wealthy and of royal families.

This is also shown by the so-called Mary Stuart collar – an example of past textile handicrafts which we can still admire on many paintings.

Whereas in antiquity it was mostly linen fabric which was pleated, for my accessories I usually use light silks such as chiffon, pongee and satin.

These materials are painted solely by hand, whereby colouring has particular significance. While the world of fashion usually limits itself to only a few colours (the latest fashionable colours), I want to present the whole spectrum of colours in my collections.

From full-tone colours to pastels, from sensuous red to cool blue – colours convey feelings and have their own language. In an interplay between colour, personality and observer, each scarf becomes an unmistakable and multi-faceted favourite item.
